HISTORY OF THE POSTILION

The property surrounding the house dates back to the time of the first settlers of Fond du Lac in historical importance. The land was purchased by Dr. Mason C. Darling in 1841. Early historians have recorded that the physician took a leading role in the affairs of Fond du Lac and bought land in what was to become the southern part of the city. Dr. Darling has been called the "Father of Fond du Lac".
In 1847, Dr. Darling sold the land at the end of Park Avenue to his son, Keyes who later transferred it to Ann M. Bowman in 1850. The house which was to become the Postilion was built shortly afterwards. In 1885, Ann (Bowman) Darling sold 80 acres to lumber mogul, Edwin A. Galloway.
Known as the "Darling House," the residence was purchased by Mr. & Mrs. John Kuony in 1949 and transformed into a French tea room and interior design studio. Bringing European flair to Fond du Lac, Madame Kuony opened her doors to students of the culinary arts. The Postilion was to remain until her passing in 2005.
